Developed in collaboration with tackling and breakdown expert and international coach Richie Gray, Gilbert has designed a range of specialist training equipment to train tackling and breakdown techniques.
The Arrowhead Contact Shield is designed to isolate the technique of the initial and subsequent contact during the collision. The attacking player must work on lowering their body height as they approach the shield so they can accurately hit the contact point with their shoulder, wrap their arm around and catch it to finish. With this training tool, the collision technique can be practiced in a safe and controlled environment before being broadcast live.
The carrier can change the height and angle of the shield to allow for different angles of entry into the collision. The training aid encourages excellent timing, accuracy and body movement during entry, clearance and completion of the controlled collision.
Includes two extra "safety shields" to allow coaches to analyze the head movement of attacking players. If you do not see the safety shields being forced back into the shield carrier's body by the attacker's head, you can correct the technique (this is called the arrowhead technique). The player is encouraged to place his ear on the protective shield, then step forward with his head held tight, chin up, and eyes facing forward.
Coaching Tips:
- Encourage players to approach the shield from different angles and speeds, always avoiding offering the player a direct approach. Consider different ways to attack the shield, such as from the front, maintaining a perpendicular position, or different entry points in relation to the collision or tackle. The bearer can also create an angle between the shield and the tackler, and can also hold the shield on his side.
- vary the approach: players lifted off the ground or other technical challenge before making the collision; direct attack against the shield or fatigue the player first, then perform the exercise so that the player's technique is under constant pressure.
- Pay attention to the speed and accuracy of movements during the exercise. The player must always have control of body movement, angle of attack, tracking, foot placement, grip and arm wrap, head on the correct side and foot tracking.
- make sure players work on both their left and right shoulders during practice.
- work on technique in a controlled environment, use "safety mats" behind the shield bearer so he is protected when he lands.
