Developed in collaboration with tackling and breakdown expert and international coach, Richie Gray , Gilbert has designed a range of specialist training equipment to train tackling and breakdown techniques.
The Line Breaker Contact Shield is designed to be easily carried by the shield carrier and is used to isolate the initial and subsequent contact technique during the ball carry. The attacking player should work on lowering their body height as they approach the shield. This allows them to step forward to aim for the edge of the shield. With this training aid, the ball carry technique can be practiced in a safe and controlled environment before being "activated".
The shield carrier can change the height of the shield. The training aid encourages excellent timing, accuracy and body movement in tackling, crossing and finishing the controlled and dynamic ball carry.
Coaching Tips:
- Encourage players to approach the shield from different angles and speeds: do not always give the player a direct approach. Consider different ways to attack the shield, such as frontally, remaining horizontally, or different entry points in relation to the collision or tackle.
- vary the approach: players lifted off the ground or other technical challenge before making the collision; direct attack against the shield or fatigue the player first, then perform the exercise so that the player's technique is under constant pressure.
- Pay attention to the speed and accuracy of movements during the exercise. The player must always have control of body movement, angle of attack, tracking, foot placement, grip and arm wrap, head on the correct side and foot tracking.
- Pay attention to the speed of movement and accuracy during the exercise. The ball carrier should always have control of the body movement, angle of attack, foot placement and body height. If using the shield for the accuracy of the initial tackle, pay attention to the trajectory, preparation, connection, acceleration and conclusion.
- make sure players work on both their left and right shoulders during practice.
- work on technique in a controlled environment, use "safety mats" behind the shield bearer so he is protected when he lands.
